day after st patties, i thought a hangover theme would be appropriate. this is stretching it, but i figured, puking=upchuck=two films that have the word up in them.

this is a documentary trying to prove that anyone can be transformed via the power of yoga. the beginning of the trailer sort of makes a joke of it, and i don't feel as though this movie wants to be taken seriously. the second half, of course, takes the serious turn showing that the film has 'depth.' going by the trailer, i am not impressed. it seems to be a standard commercial trying to gain as much interest as possible. the movie clip, however, gives a much better feel for what the movie really is about: the philosophy of life, and how yoga is applied to one's outlook. the clip makes up for the run-of-the-mill trailer, and gives you a better idea what this movie is about.

why does it seem as though pixar is the only animation studio that continues to create new and interesting stories? i'll admit, i have a soft spot for pixar {although i haven't seen cars or wall-E yet} so i may be a bit biased. but not only do they have the idea of this man lifting his whole house away, but from this new trailer, it seems as though they are also floating into another world. i am much more interested in this film after seeing this trailer in comparison to some of the teasers. i'm already predicting the typical 'odd couple' type for the two main characters. you all know how it goes: two opposite people find themselves in the same situation, so they loath eachother and complain about how they are in said situation. over the course of the film they go through a trasition of becoming friends or lovers, with a possible falling out right before the climax, and then they live happily ever after. these types are SOOOO predictable and SOOO typical it usualy kills a film, but there are some exceptions. how to lose a guy in 10 days and toy story are two i can think of right now {they are also the two films on the shelf closest to me}.
one problem i have with this movie, and this is just more just a generality, but what is up with this 3-D trend? it isn't a new technology, so why has it suddenly infiltrated film, mainly animation? i find it to be distracting, and it seems to be a last resort marketing technique. this movie is in 3D!!! so it must be amazing, and you won't notice the flat plotline and terrible acting! *cough*mybloddyvalentine*cough*
i would much rather see 'up' NOT released as 3D. it should be strong enough that it can make the sales without having to resort to this gimick. the children who are seeing all these new cartoons in 3D won't remember how that explosion looked awfuly close to their face, they're going to remember the substance {that is, if substance still exists in films relying on 3-D...}.

PAUL DANO DAY!!! {gigantic, explixit ills}
http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/gigantic/
this will probably be a movie that i will rent sometime in the future {mainly because films like this never come to our local theatre}. the trailer is obvious: a relationship sprouts between paul dano and zooey daschnel- but at the same time, a bit mysterious: dano, a young, single, straight guy, is adopting a baby? what the hell? ...why? i am compelled to see this movie basically to see the wonderful john goodman for the first time in years {animation, shopaholic, and speedracer don't count}, and to figure out this baby mystery.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/explicitills/
odds of me seeing this movie are very slim based off of this trailer. i am tired of the inspiring-true story-rise-up-from-poverty genre. i do like the idea of the entire neighborhood standing together and protesting, but nothing about the trailer really made me want to see this movie.
i'm sorry paul dano, it doesn't look like this is your year to shine. you still are an excellent actor, and by now everyone has forgotten about the girl next door.

public enemies and the velveteen rabbit
http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/publicenemies/large.html
this is what spurred this whole blog expedition. i am beyond excited for this movie, especially because they filmed for two weeks in my hometown last spring. i got to watch them film in spots where i hung out in middle school, and in the building where my mom used to do jazzercise. i got to touch johnny depp in the parking lot of our public library.
in the same building where we had "pottermania" six months previous and where i was handed my 7th harry potter book, they transformed it into the bank it was 70 years earlier and had the boys come in with tommyguns. it blows my mind.
anyway, getting past the parts in the trailer where i jump and say, 'OOOH! THAT WAS THE NATIONAL BUILDING!!! AH THAT'S THE EXCLUSIVE COMPANY!' this movie looks damn good. i am fascinated with the story of john dillinger and the crime spree of the 30s, and cannot wait to see this adaptation. the trailer promises action, romance, and rich american history.michael mann will not dissappoint.

on a completly opposite note, this trailer was totally disappointing. i remember the story of the velveteen rabbit very well; i'm pretty sure i would cry when it was read to me. They boy is pretty spoiled, and he only starts to play with the rabbit because he lost a different toy. the boy then gets very sick, and the rabbit is his only friend. the doctors and his nanny want to burn the rabbit because it has his germs all over it, but instead they ditch all his toys outside. while oustide, a fairy turns the rabbit into a real rabbit because he was loved at one point.
this movie trailer doesn't seem to have any of those aspects of the story. sure, there's a toy rabbit, and a boy who plays and loves it, but that seems to be the end of it. i remember from the book that his nanny was pretty evil, and in the movie she's all lovey and turns animated and dances on a hill with them. this is NOT how the story is: there is NO loving family, just evil grown-ups who want to burn your toys. the main character is supposed to be the rabbit, and it's supposed to be about his transformation and about love. the movie seems to be more focused on the boy. i will not be seeing this movie, not just because the target audience is children, but because it seems to be a mangled, poor version of a beloved, classic tale.
that's it for today. more trailer reviews to come later.
