this is what spurred this whole blog expedition. i am beyond excited for this movie, especially because they filmed for two weeks in my hometown last spring. i got to watch them film in spots where i hung out in middle school, and in the building where my mom used to do jazzercise. i got to touch johnny depp in the parking lot of our public library.
in the same building where we had "pottermania" six months previous and where i was handed my 7th harry potter book, they transformed it into the bank it was 70 years earlier and had the boys come in with tommyguns. it blows my mind.
anyway, getting past the parts in the trailer where i jump and say, 'OOOH! THAT WAS THE NATIONAL BUILDING!!! AH THAT'S THE EXCLUSIVE COMPANY!' this movie looks damn good. i am fascinated with the story of john dillinger and the crime spree of the 30s, and cannot wait to see this adaptation. the trailer promises action, romance, and rich american history.michael mann will not dissappoint.

on a completly opposite note, this trailer was totally disappointing. i remember the story of the velveteen rabbit very well; i'm pretty sure i would cry when it was read to me. They boy is pretty spoiled, and he only starts to play with the rabbit because he lost a different toy. the boy then gets very sick, and the rabbit is his only friend. the doctors and his nanny want to burn the rabbit because it has his germs all over it, but instead they ditch all his toys outside. while oustide, a fairy turns the rabbit into a real rabbit because he was loved at one point.
this movie trailer doesn't seem to have any of those aspects of the story. sure, there's a toy rabbit, and a boy who plays and loves it, but that seems to be the end of it. i remember from the book that his nanny was pretty evil, and in the movie she's all lovey and turns animated and dances on a hill with them. this is NOT how the story is: there is NO loving family, just evil grown-ups who want to burn your toys. the main character is supposed to be the rabbit, and it's supposed to be about his transformation and about love. the movie seems to be more focused on the boy. i will not be seeing this movie, not just because the target audience is children, but because it seems to be a mangled, poor version of a beloved, classic tale.
that's it for today. more trailer reviews to come later.
